Follow the Flock

How did Franz Witte end up with the pink birds on their lawn? Years ago, Franz wanted to do something to set us apart from other nurseries on State Street so he said to Vicki, his wife, “Hey lets get a hundred pink flamingos and stick them out in the lawn one day and really freak people out!” She found the suppliers of pink flamingos and ordered 100 of them. The minimum, however, was 120, but what she didn’t realize was that she was ordering pairs so we actually got 120 pairs of the darn things!!!

We got our flamingos, put them out on the lawn and got a great response from all of our customers; they really thought it was funny. What we didn’t expect, was that our customers would want to buy them! We had not even planned on selling them, let alone selling out—but we did. Since then we have sold thousands of the pink birds. People from all over the country stop to look and even take pictures with them!

We have heard many amusing stories about our flamingos, we may have to write a book someday—so if you have one, please let us know! Send us an email or write us on Facebook—or just come in and share. The flamingos have become somewhat of their own deal—we don’t tell them what to do, they run the show. We do however send them out on “flockings” once in a while though!
